Red was born in Brooklyn, New York, on Sept. 20, 1917, and died in Washington, D. C. on October 28, 2006.
His career with the Celtics spanned over fifty years. Although during his tenure he held many titles--Head Coach, General Manager, Vice Chairman of the Board and President -- he was simply referred to as "The Coach."
"The Coach" and his Celtics won a record nine titles from 1957 to 1966. Red was the architect of the tradition known as Celtics Pride. He received numerous awards and honors and was a sought after speaker for graduation ceremonies, civic groups, and corporations. In 1985, a life-size sculpture was unveiled and placed in Boston's historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace.
